ABOUT MARIAH KITNER

ARTIST STATEMENT

In my art practice, I am driven by the power of context. Rooted in personal development and introspection, my art serves as a reflection of my own reality—a reality that challenges the notion that there is only one way to perceive and navigate the world. I believe in the existence of boundless possibilities, and this belief finds expression in my ceramics.

Utilizing diverse techniques and mediums, I create vibrant, saturated glazes, whimsical landscapes, and architectural allusions, resulting in surreal and sculptural yet functional objects. Clay becomes my three-dimensional canvas, allowing me to break free from traditional constraints and give birth to entirely new and previously unimagined forms.

During my recent residency at the Skopelos Foundation for the Arts, I had the privilege of delving into the ancient Greek amphora forms and red figure paintings. Reimagining these historical elements within a contemporary context of brainwave frequencies, I forged connections between frequencies—such as beta, alpha, and theta waves—and their relationship to mythology and human energies. By infusing these ancient Greek traditions with new life, my artworks serve as bridges between antiquity and the present, provoking contemplation of the enduring resonance of human consciousness.

Through my art, I invite viewers to embark on their own journeys of exploration and contemplation. By challenging preconceived notions and inviting fresh perspectives, I strive to inspire wonder and curiosity. My artist statement serves as an invitation to transcend the ordinary and embrace the infinite possibilities that await within the realm of imagination and creation.
